PROBLEM 1:
You can't send (or receive) e-mail There are several possible reasons for this to occur. These 5 steps will take you through some of the most common ones:

Step 1: Check your settings
When you set up your mail program, you have to tell it where to go to get your mail: that's the server information. The correct e-mail server settings for NCIA are:

Here's how to locate your settings:

Microsoft® Outlook® Express 5 and Outlook Express 4
1. From mail, click on the Tools menu.
2. Click on Accounts.
3. Click on the Properties button (under the Mail tab).
4. Click on the Servers tab. Here you should find your mail settings.

Microsoft® Internet Mail
1. From mail, open up the Mail menu in the top toolbar.
2. Click on Options.
3. Click on the Server tab.

Netscape® Messenger
1. From your Netscape Navigator browser, select Edit from the Menu Bar and choose Preferences...
2. Click on Mail & Groups
3. Click Mail Server
4. In the "Mail server user name" box, type your NCIA login/username
5. In the "Outgoing mail (SMTP) server" box, type the correct outgoing mailserver name
6. In the "Incoming mail server" box, type: mailhost.ncia.net
7. Select POP3
8. Click OK

Netscape® Mail
1. From mail, go to Options.
2. Click on Mail and News Preferences.
3. Click on the Servers tab. Here you should find your mail settings.

Step 2: Are you using Outlook 97?
If you've recently installed the Microsoft® Outlook® 97 mail client, you could experience problems with your e-mail, including: being unable to retrieve your e-mail, not being able to launch Outlook 97, getting "mapi32.dll file" errors, and not being able to select Outlook Express as your default mail client.
These problems occur because Outlook Express, which is the mail client that comes bundled with your Prodigy Internet software, corrupts a file that Outlook 97 needs to run correctly. Once installed, Outlook 97 will also set itself up as the default mail client and erase all the mail settings in Outlook Express. If you want to use Outlook 97 instead of Outlook Express will have to obtain a copy of the mapi32.dll file from Microsoft to enable the program to function correctly.
If you would like to revert back to Outlook Express, your mail settings will have to be entered manually. The settings are listed at the top of this page.

Step 3: Check your mailbox size limits
Your NCIA mailbox can hold up to 5MB of mail. Once you reach your limit, anyone who sends you e-mail will get it bounced back with a message that your mailbox is full. You can avoid this problem by not storing your e-mail on our servers:

Microsoft Outlook Express 5 and Outlook Express 4:
1. Click on Tools on the Menu Bar at the top of the screen
2. Select Accounts from the drop-down menu
3. Click on the Mail tab; then click on Properties
4. Click on the Advanced tab
5. Un-check the Leave a copy of messages on server option in the Delivery area
6. Click Apply
7. Click OK

Netscape Mail
1. Click on Options on the Menu Bar at the top of the screen
2. Select Mail and News Preferences from the drop-down menu
3. Click on the Servers tab
4. Under Mail, select Removed from the server
5. Click OK

Microsoft Internet Mail (Windows® versions)
1. Click on Mail on the Menu Bar at the top of the screen
2. Select Options from the drop-down menu
3. Click on the Server tab; then click on Advanced Settings
4. Un-check the Leave a copy of messages on server option in the Delivery area
5. Click OK

Microsoft Internet Mail (Macintosh® version)
1. Click on Edit on the Menu Bar at the top of the screen and point to Preferences
2. Click on the Advanced button
3. Under Server Settings, click on Delete received mail from server
4. Click OK
5. Click OK again

Step 4: Are you using Norton Anti-Virus?

Step 5: Check to see if you have a corrupt Inbox or Outbox. If none of the above steps works, you may have a "corrupt" Inbox (if you can't receive e-mail) or Outbox (if you can't send mail). If it is corrupt, you'll need to delete the box, but unfortunately you'll lose any messages that are in the box. Here's how to do this:

1. Close Outlook Express.
2. From the Start menu in the lower left-hand corner of your screen, choose "Find."
3. Look in the C Drive.
4. Put in the following name to be searched for:

    Outbox: outbox.mbx
    Inbox: inbox.mbx
5. When you find the file, delete it.
6. Repeat this process for outbox.idx or inbox.idx
7. Launch Outlook Express; your mail should now be functioning properly.

PROBLEM 2:
You get "stuck" while you're trying to download your e-mail through Outlook Express.
If there is a very large file sitting in your mailbox that would take a long time to download, this might cause your connection to our mail servers to "timeout," or freeze. You can solve this problem by using a web-based e-mail system such as www.mailstart.com

PROBLEM 3:
You want to use Outlook Express as your default e-mail program. You can set Microsoft Outlook Express to be your default e-mail program, so that Outlook Express opens whenever you click an e-mail link on a Web page, or choose the mail command in your Web browser or newsreader. Here's how to configure Outlook Express as your default mail program.

1. On your desktop, double-click on My Computer
2. Double-click on Control Panel
3. Double-click the Internet icon
4. Select the Programs tab
5. From the pull-down menu, Choose "Outlook Express" as the default e-mail program
6. Click Apply
7. Click OK
8. Close Control Panel and My Computer

PROBLEM 4:
Outlook Express tries to dial or dials when I am already connected. This problem occurs when the settings in Mail are configured to establish a connection before sending or receiving e-mail. To fix this, try these steps. You will have to repeat these steps for each account listed on the Mail tab.

Outlook Express 4
1. Open Outlook Express
2. Click Tools
3. Select Accounts
4. Select Mail
5. Click the NCIA mail account name (e.g. mailhost.ncia.net)
6. Click Properties
7. Select Connection
8. Select Connect using Internet Explorer's or a third Party Dialer
9. Click Apply
10. Click OK

Outlook Express 5
1. Open Outlook Express
2. Click on Tools
3. Select Accounts
4. Select Mail
5. Click the NCIA mail account name (e.g. mailhost.ncia.net)
6. Click Properties
7. Select Connection
8. Uncheck Always connect to this account using...
9. Click Apply
10. Click OK

PROBLEM 5:
Can't Open Mail error message appears in Outlook Express. If you receive a Can't Open Mail error message when you try to get to e-mail from your toolbar menu, it may be because there's no e-mail program specified in the Internet Explorer Program Settings.

To fix this:
1. Open Internet Explorer
2. Click View
3. Choose Internet Options...
4. Select the Programs tab
5. Verify the MAIL: line displays the e-mail program you desire (Outlook Express is recommended)
6. If the proper e-mail program is not displayed, choose it from the pull-down menu
7. Click Apply
8. Click OK
Note: If the e-mail program you want to use is not listed in the pull-down menu, contact that program's manufacturer for additional assistance.
