The first and most important rule with a 56K modem is to make certain you
are using the very latest firmware. The 'firmware' is the code inside the
modem that makes it work. Most 56K modems are upgradeable. Contact your
modem vendor for more information about upgrading your modem with the newest firmware.
Connection speeds are influenced largely by the modem driver you have installed.
Be sure you are using the latest modem driver available from your modem manufacturer. Also make
sure it is compatible with the latest V90 standard.
You should be able to download it from their web site, then reinstall your
modem using that driver.
You should have no problem connecting to the 56k digital number. However,
there are many different modem manufacturers and some analog modems do not
function properly with digital equipment. The digital access number is meant to
be used by people with 56k v.90 or X2 standard modems, but usually
functions with any modem. If you are experiencing connection problems with the 56k phone number try
connecting to the analog phone number for your area. Click here if you are
unsure of what number to choose.
56K Flex technology is not compatible with the industry standard V.90.
You won't see speeds greater than 33.6 until you make the move to V.90.
Most modem makers offer free upgrades from Flex to
V.90.
